How to prepare your car for winter: an 8-point checklist

Winter tires are mandatory in Estonia from December 1 to March 1, but we recommend switching already in October — at +7°C, summer tires lose elasticity and braking distance increases noticeably before the official date.

Tires

Check the tread depth — a minimum of 4 mm for winter tires. The law allows 3 mm, but 4 mm is a reasonable minimum for real safety on ice and slush. If it's less, it's time to buy new ones — don't wait for critical wear.

Battery

A battery older than 4 years needs testing. We measure starting current and capacity — if readings are below normal, it's better to replace it before the cold sets in, not when the car refuses to start at –20°C in the middle of winter.

If the battery is fine, make sure the terminals are clean and tightly secured. Corroded contacts are one of the most common causes of cold-morning starting problems.

Fluids and wipers

Switch to winter windshield washer fluid (–20°C and below) — summer fluid will simply freeze in the reservoir. Check the coolant level and its freezing point — it should be at least –35°C.

Wiper blades last one to two seasons. If they smear instead of clean, replace them. Visibility is critical in winter, so this isn't the place to save money.

What else to check

- Braking system — pads, discs, hoses
- Lights — all headlights and turn signals should work flawlessly
- Heating — seats, windows, mirrors
- Door rubber seals — applying silicone lubricant prevents them from freezing shut

The best way to check everything at once is to come in for an autumn inspection. A mechanic will go through the checklist in 30 minutes and tell you what needs doing before winter.
